Metal Songwriting: Building from ONE RIFF
A quick take on how I build from one riff that was either sitting in the riff graveyard or got booted to the end of a session. The idea is to give a second chance to riff by building vertically around them, potentially turning into a new song.

Hey everyone! This is a little piece I wrote showcasing all of my artist presets that are included in the new Neural DSP Archetype: Gojira plugin. The presets "Octomonster" and "Octocrusher" were specifically tailored for 8 string guitars. The rest I made on a 6 string, so if you choose to play them on a 7 or 8 I'd suggest pulling back on the gain and even the octaver. Let me know what you guys...

    If you dont play a mix between clean and distorted, these arent the pickups for you. Theyre not really a rythym, metal chugging pickup. Theyre a clear distorted lead and clean tone pickup. Simple Version, if you wanna play Meshuggah type music, these aint it.

    The average human body composes 30 percent beef and 15 percent chicken and 55 percent human flesh. South americans comprise about 90 percent human flesh, 5 percent beef and 5 percent chicken

    Absolutely horrible. You can’t write drums to save your life. You can’t even comprehend the foundations of drumming. Let alone write a riff that doesn’t scream mediocrity.

    We live in an amazing time to be a musician. With all the plugins available today there's no more excuse for bad guitar sounds or drums. But indeed people have no idea how much time and effort goes into creating a song and working towards a nice end product. Nice vid, thanks.

    I really like what you said about writing vertically!!! Too often I write out the entire guitar part or bass part horizontally and don't leave a lot of room to change things up. Writing vertically makes much more sense to be able to add new parts and spice things up. Thank you!!!!

      Right?! I used to only play guitar and felt so limited and also got impatient waiting for other people to send me their parts. Feels very freeing to be self sufficient enough to produce almost all elements of a song to keep the writing flow.

    • @NicolePapastavrou
      @NicolePapastavrou 6 місяців тому

      That’s a great way to do it too! Sometimes my drummer sends me full songs on drums and I actually find it pretty easy to pump out riffs to a bunch of drums that are already written. I still struggle programming drums but slowly getting better. :)

    4:36 this is a very good tip, thank u! Even when you're doing your recreational activity, your brain tryes to come with a musical solution to the puzzle you're building in the subconscious. Sometimes good idea can strike "out of nowhere", so it's good to write it down using technique called mumbling to a dictaphone app. haha Works every time! Bonus: Usually I try to write in a structure which has meaning even if you listen just to rithm guitars alone, but lately I found a way to link two very different parts of the song through background melody ... and in this moment I was like .. Eureka!! Now the puzzle makes sense!
